Blood of Ancient Kings Prologue
In every culture there is a history that needs to be remembered. Without remembering the past, the same mistakes are repeated. On this earth-like planet the story of the bloodline of the ancient kings of Brinley is an important one. For generations royal marriages were arranged and politically motivated. The marriage of King Hessgar and Queen Perla was to insure that the neighboring kingdom of Okiah would not invade the village of Nordham where the gemstone mines were. Their only son, Burkhart, became king when King Hessgar suddenly died. King Burkhart immediately broke his engagement to the woman his father chose for him and married the sister of one of the servants. King Burkhart increased taxes so he could lavish her with expensive clothing and jewelry. He outlawed any opposition and anyone openly speaking against him was executed. He ruled through fear. Every man was taken from his home at seventeen to spend three years in the military. If they refused they were executed.

In the fifth year of his reign, King Burkhart began hearing rumors that one of the colonels suddenly vanished. This Colonel Langward had even stood guard in the palace frequently during his military service. The official report was that he had died while on border patrol, but no body was found. King Burkhart began hearing rumors that Langward still lived and was planning to take the throne from him. He tried having Langward found, but his brother and parents thought him dead. His wife had vanished and some mentioned her saying she didn’t want to raise his child she was carrying alone. As much as he hated and even feared this Langward, that news struck his heart because his own beloved Queen Aurita was due to give birth soon. She had been so very sick while carrying his child and spent much of her time in bed.
